The Mississippi Department of Marine Resources in conjunction
with Mississippi Gulf Fishing Banks has 15 permitted offshore reef
sites. The sites combined cover approximately 16,000 acres, with
sites ranging from 3 to 10,000 acres. The sites located north of the
barrier islands consist of concrete rubble while the sites located
south of the barrier islands consist of concrete culverts, steel
hull vessels, and "Florida Limestone" artificial reef pyramids.
In 2007, the MSDMR received federal funds from the Emergency
Disaster Recovery Program (EDRP). The funds from EDRP will be used
in a 5 year restoration project for both inshore & offshore
artificial reef sites and will be used to speed up the recovery
progress from the damage that Hurricane Katrina caused to
Mississippi's artificial reef habitat.
