Official Mississippi Coastal Cleanup Website The Mississippi Department of Marine Resources is state coordinator of the Mississippi Coastal Cleanup, which is held each year on the third Saturday in September in conjunction with the International Coastal Cleanup. The mission of the Mississippi Coastal Cleanup is to remove debris from shorelines, bayous, bays, rivers, waterways and beaches; collect valuable information on the amount and types of debris collected; educate people on the issue of marine debris; and use the data collected to affect positive change. During the 2007 cleanup, 3,483 volunteers picked up 58,830 pounds of trash along Mississippi's coastal waterways.
